Rain pounds TN, life hit in several parts

Barely a day after the Northeast monsoon set in, life was affected in several parts of Tamil Nadu on Monday.

Rain battered the state, even as another low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday.

Regional Meteorological Centre officials told DH on Monday that since the Northeast monsoon is active over Tamil Nadu, rainfall occurred at most places in the state and neighbouring Kerala.

According to the Met office, the upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal moved inland and now lies over interior Tamil Nadu, adjoining areas of Kerala and south interior Karnataka, and extends up to 1.5 km above the mean sea level.

“Under its influence, a fresh low pressure area is very likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours,” a senior Met official said. He said heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu in the next 48 hours, even as fishermen were warned not to venture into the sea.
